NPS Assertion: Congress intended that the oyster farm be removed in 2012
The Park Service and its allies claim, without evidence, that Congress “promised” during the founding of Point Reyes National Seashore to remove the oyster farm from Drakes Estero in 2012 and designate the estero a marine wilderness.
DBOC Assertion: The oyster farm was always intended to stay
Founding legislators who are still alive say they never intended the oyster farm to be removed, and have documented that history. The Seashore was created in part to protect the area’s agricultural heritage. Dr. Laura Watt has published widely on this topic; see, for example, this overview.
