Albert Straus, Founder & CEO of Straus Family Creamery, is a pioneer in organic dairy farming. In 1994, he transitioned his dairy, which is located on the shores of Tomales Bay, to become the first certified organic dairy west of the Mississippi River. During the same year, he founded Straus Family Creamery, which was the first 100% organic creamery in the United States.
Albert Straus and his three siblings were influenced early on by their parents Bill and Ellen Straus who were very early environmentalists in the ranching community. They saw farmland as a part of a much bigger, natural world that needed to be respected and preserved on its own terms, and they had a day-to-day commitment as stewards of the land. Their commitment to agriculture and the environment helped launch a conservation movement that has permanently saved tens of thousands of acres of endangered agricultural land from development subdivision.
